Our Projects

Friends of Romiley Park have helped to make a number of improvements within the park. Take a look at our list of projects below and see if you can remember what the park used to look like.

Wildflower Meadow

wildflower meadowIn just under 100 years the UK has lost 7.5 million acres, 97% of wildflower meadow and flower-rich grassland. 1400 insect species rely on wildflowers for survival. Insect pollinators help increase crops and fight against crop pests. They help maintain a healthy ecosystem and have made a significant contribution to modern medicine. Meadow areas absorb carbon dioxide and also help capture & filter out different pollutants from the atmosphere.

In 2012, HRH The Prince of Wales called for action to ‘turn the tide’ on the fate of UK Wildflower meadows.

In the autumn of 2021, The Friends of Romiley Park began preparations for a wildflower meadow. The chosen place for this, is the grassed area at the back of the park, where the pathways of all three entry's to the greenspace meet.

Childrens Play Area

Romiley Park play areaIn the Spring of 2009, the Friends Group successfully obtained a £25,000 grant from The Big Lottery, along with £1,000 from AkzoNobel and Commuted Funds via Stockport MBC. These monies have enabled us to remove some of the 1970’s play equipment in the children’s play area and replace them with up to date items.

Park Benches

Picnic bench in Romiley ParkSo far we have added two new benches to the park. One is a circular bench around a tree in memory of one of our volunteers, which was paid for by his family. The other is a picnic bench funded by a successful grant application to the Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund.
